Winnipeg has a mean January temperature of about −16 °C.1 Nobody is bouncing in the backyard. But January birthdays still happen, school carnivals still happen, and church family nights happen more in winter than in summer. All of it moves inside, and a bouncy castle is the one party rental that turns an empty gym into the event.

This guide covers the four things that decide whether a castle works in a room: ceiling height, floor space, power, and the floor itself. Then it walks through the venues Winnipeg families actually use, and how to book one.

Why winter is indoor season

Our castles are vinyl. In deep cold, vinyl stiffens, seams stress, and kids in snowsuits do not bounce well anyway. So from roughly November to April we treat every booking as an indoor booking. The upside is that an indoor setup is more predictable than any summer one: no wind, no rain, no soggy ground, no sunset. You book the room, we fill it.

Winter is also when our calendar is most open. Summer weekends book out first. A Saturday in February usually has room for a short-notice booking.

Ceiling height: which castles fit

The castle height on each card is the inflated height at the highest point. Add about 2 feet of clearance so the roof can flex and nothing touches light fixtures, basketball hoops or a lowered backboard. The table below shows the lowest ceiling each castle needs.

Gym ceilings vary a lot between Winnipeg schools. Older elementary gyms can be lower than you expect; newer and high-school gyms are usually generous. The custodian knows the number, and so does a tape measure held up against a wall to the lowest obstruction (often the hoop, not the ceiling).

CastleHeightNeeds ceiling of at leastFootprintPrice
Fun Tunnel 8 ft 10 ft 40 × 40 ft $275
Medium Bouncer 12 ft 14 ft 27 × 20 ft $275
Medium Bouncer & Slide (27 ft) 13 ft 15 ft 27 × 20 ft $275
Obstacle Course 14 ft 16 ft 38 × 20 ft $500
Medium Bouncer & Slide (20 ft) 14 ft 16 ft 20 × 16 ft $275
Medium Bouncer & Slide (32 ft) 14 ft 16 ft 32 × 20 ft $275
Electric Obstacle Course 16 ft 18 ft 38 × 20 ft $500
Monster Truck Bouncer & Slide 22 ft 24 ft 38 × 20 ft $700
UFO Bouncer & Slide 22 ft 24 ft 42 × 25 ft $500
Giant Slide 24 ft 26 ft 30 × 25 ft $500

Three rules of thumb that follow from the table:

  • Under 12 ft of clearance (church basements, many community centre halls, daycares): the Fun Tunnel is the only pick, and it is a good one. It is a crawl-through maze, 40 × 40 ft, and kids under 8 treat it like a fort.
  • 14 to 16 ft (most elementary gyms, larger halls): the Medium Bouncer, all three Medium Bouncer & Slide combos, and the Obstacle Course fit. That is 5 of the 10 castles.
  • 18 ft and up (high-school gyms, arenas, field houses): everything except the Giant Slide (24 ft) fits; the Giant Slide needs 26 ft.

Floor space and doors

A regulation high-school basketball court is 94 × 50 ft; elementary gyms are often around 60 × 40 ft or smaller. The Monster Truck at 38 × 20 ft takes most of the width of a small gym, and so does the UFO at 42 × 25 ft. The medium combos at 20 × 16 ft to 32 × 20 ft leave room for a second activity, a food table and a line.

Add about 3 ft on every side for the blower, the entry mat and the line-up. A 27 × 20 ft combo therefore wants a clear area of roughly 33 × 26 ft.

We bring every castle in deflated and rolled. What we need from the building is a ground-level or ramped entrance and a route to the room we can wheel a cart along. Stairs are the thing to tell us about when you book; a flight of stairs can rule out the biggest units.

Power

Each castle runs on its own blower, plugged into a standard household outlet. The blower runs the whole time the castle is in use. Three things to check:

  1. Distance. We need an outlet within reach of the setup spot. Long extension-cord runs lose power and trip people; tell us where the outlets are and we will set up near one.
  2. Separate circuits for two castles. If you book a party package (two castles), put each blower on a different circuit. In a gym that usually means outlets on opposite walls. Two blowers on one 15-amp circuit can trip the breaker mid-party.
  3. Nothing else on that circuit. Popcorn machines, coffee urns and PA systems should go on another outlet.

No outlet near the spot? We rent generators, but they stay outdoors, so that is a summer answer, not a gym answer.

Floor protection and anchoring

Indoors we do not stake anything. The castle sits on a ground tarp and is held with weights. The things custodians ask about most:

  • Hardwood gym floors. The tarp goes down first, then the castle. No stakes, no tape on the floor, no dragging; we carry the unit in on a cart and unroll it in place.
  • Rubber and tile floors. Same setup. Tell us if the floor has been freshly waxed; it is slippery under a tarp.
  • Carpet. Fine, and the quietest option for a church hall.
  • Shoes off. Socks only inside the castle. Put a box or a bench by the entrance for shoes; it keeps the line moving and keeps grit off the vinyl.

Gyms, halls and churches in Winnipeg

School gyms

The most common winter venue. If you are a parent council or staff member, the school's own booking covers you. Outside groups apply through the school division's community-use process. Winnipeg School Division, for example, takes applications from not-for-profit groups through an online permit system and asks for a minimum of three weeks' notice.2 Other divisions in and around the city (Pembina Trails, St. James-Assiniboia, Louis Riel, River East Transcona, Seven Oaks) have their own forms; the lead times are similar. Book the gym first, then the castle.

Community centres

Winnipeg has 63 community centres run by volunteer boards, each renting its own hall.3 Hall ceilings are the variable: many are around 10 to 12 ft, which means the Fun Tunnel, while some have a full gym attached. Ask the centre for the ceiling height before you pick a castle, or send us a photo and we will tell you.

Churches

Church gyms and fellowship halls are a quiet winter workhorse for family nights, youth events and Christmas parties. Same questions as a community centre: ceiling height, an outlet, a level route in from the parking lot.

Arenas, field houses and indoor soccer

If you want the Giant Slide or the Monster Truck indoors in February, this is where they fit. The floor is usually turf or concrete; both are fine with a tarp.

How to book the room, then the castle

  1. Confirm the room date with the school, centre or church. Ask for ceiling height (or the lowest obstruction), the door route, and where the outlets are.
  2. Count the kids. Under 15, one medium castle. 15 to 40, a medium combo or two mediums. More than that, see the school events guide.
  3. Text us at (204) 232-8394 with the date, the venue, the ceiling height and the head count. We confirm which castles fit and hold the date.
  4. Tell the venue it is a commercial inflatable on a tarp with no stakes, and ask whether they want anything in writing. Some venues ask for a supplier's insurance certificate; tell us if yours does and we will deal with it directly.
  5. On the day we need about 30 to 45 minutes before your start time to carry in and inflate, and similar after to deflate and roll.

Quick answers

Can a bouncy castle go in a school gym?

Yes. A gym is the best indoor spot in Winnipeg: flat floor, high ceiling, outlets on the wall. Check the ceiling height against the castle height plus 2 feet of clearance, and ask the custodian where the nearest outlet is.

What is the lowest bouncy castle you rent?

The Fun Tunnel is 8 feet high and fits under almost any ceiling, including most church basements and community centre halls. The Medium Bouncer is 12 feet high. Both are $275 per 3 hours.

Do you set up outdoors in winter?

Winter is indoor season for us. Between November and April, plan on a gym, hall, church or community centre. Text us if you have an unusual outdoor idea and we will talk it through.

Will a bouncy castle damage a gym floor?

Castles sit on a tarp and are weighted, not staked, indoors. Tell the venue it is an inflatable with a ground tarp and no stakes; that answers the question most custodians ask first.

How much space do I need around it?

Add about 3 feet on every side of the footprint for the blower, the entrance mat and kids lining up. The footprint for each castle is on its card.
